Melbourne winters are long, and the last thing you want is a heater that won't start on the first cold night. These five steps will help your system run safely and efficiently all season.
1. Book a service before the cold arrives
Heating technicians get busy once temperatures drop. Booking in autumn means shorter waits and a system that is ready when you need it. Energy Safe Victoria recommends servicing gas heaters at least every two years.
2. Clean or replace filters
Dirty filters restrict airflow, make the system work harder and reduce the warmth reaching each room.
3. Check vents and return air grilles
Make sure furniture, rugs and curtains are not blocking outlets or the return air grille. Blocked airflow reduces performance and can cause the system to overheat.
4. Test your thermostat
Run the heating briefly and check it responds to your settings. A programmable or smart thermostat can lower running costs by heating only when you need it.
5. Look for warning signs
A yellow or orange flame, soot marks, unusual smells or a pilot light that keeps going out all need prompt attention. Switch the heater off and book a service.
