Choosing between a split system and ducted air conditioning is one of the most common questions Melbourne homeowners ask us. Both are reverse cycle — they heat as well as cool — but they suit very different homes, layouts and budgets.
How split systems work
A split system has an indoor unit mounted on a wall and an outdoor compressor unit, connected by refrigerant pipework. Each indoor unit conditions the room it sits in. Multi-head systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit.
Best for
- Apartments, units and townhouses
- Conditioning one or two main living areas or bedrooms
- Lower upfront cost and quick installation
How ducted systems work
A ducted system hides the indoor unit in the roof space or under the floor and delivers air through ducts to discreet vents in each room. With zoning, you can switch areas of the home on or off independently.
Best for
- Larger family homes
- Even temperatures throughout the house
- A clean look with no wall-mounted units
Running costs
Split systems are very efficient because you only condition the rooms you are using. Ducted systems condition more space, but zoning and a programmable controller help keep costs down. Insulation, window coverings and correct sizing matter just as much as the system type.
Our recommendation
For smaller homes, one or two well-placed split systems are usually the best value. For larger homes where you want whole-of-house comfort, ducted is often the better long-term investment. We are happy to assess your home and give you an honest recommendation.
